Who I am?

My Autobiography
Who I am in life?
I am Xiaoyan Fan from China. Born and brought up in a farm, early in my education, I majored in Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science at a vocational school in Southern China. Sometimes, I joked with my friends that if I insisted on working in that area, I might have become the owner of a pig farm. However, to me, working in a farm seemed not very 'sanitary' or ‘ideal', so I chose to work as an editor assistant for an agricultural magazine. I wanted to improve my English which I believed was a way or tool to open a new window, so I began to teach myself English lessons. Later on, I quit my job, dedicated to my English studies full-time. In 2003, I got accepted by the graduate program of Interpreting and Translation Studies at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. Since graduating in 2006, I’ve taught English at a language training school, China New Oriental School. While I taught, I learned. But I wanted to improve my teaching. Luckily, I was accepted by NYU. I major in TESOL, and also take some business courses in Stern. Now, I’ve been in New York for 13 months.
I enjoy my life in New York. I like my little apartment, my roommates and the city. And I also feel fortunate to have made some good friends and met many excellent teachers here. Besides my study and on-campus work, I love going to the gym (mainly swimming, and doing sauna in Coles), drawing, watching movies and cooking.
My outlook on the future
I feel optimistic even though the future is full of uncertainty. I want to work in NYC for several years and find a career which can make me travel back and forth between America and China. I really hope that I can apply what I’ve learned here --- the foreign language education and the business administration, into my future career and improve the education in China in the future.
I remember that in the animated movie ‘Gongfu Panda’, the Master Wugui (turtle) said, ‘Yesterday is past. Tomorrow is uncertain. But only today is PRESENT.’ And I know how lucky I am to be ‘who I am’.
